We train volunteers to tutor adults one-on-one, who read below the
5th grade level. Tutors and students meet according to their schedule
and at a central location of their choosing, as long as it is not
in each other’s home. The commitment is two hours a week for
at least one year. Click
here to learn about becoming a Basic Literacy tutor.
We also train volunteers to become one-on-one or small group tutors
for non English-speaking adults. Proficiency in a foreign language
is not necessary. The commitment is the same as for a basic tutor.

Trained Basic or ESL tutors are needed to demonstrate to parents
how to make reading to their children fun utilizing crafts, games
and activities. Programs are held throughout Atlanta and require
two hours a week for six to 12 weeks.

Help is needed in the planning and development of all our fundraising
events, including Spellabration in June, LVA’s primary fundraising
event which includes the Annual Scrabble Tournament and Annual Spelling
Bee. Volunteers are needed for every possible area imaginable, from
recruiting participants for the events and soliciting sponsors and
auction items to decorating, publicizing, and assisting with mailings.

more information about Special Events.
Raise awareness about adult and family literacy by volunteering
as a guest speaker, educating organizations about LVA's programs,
or contact federal, state and local government officials to support
literacy issues.
Volunteers needed to help sort, bundle, label, and organize mass
mailings. Knowledge of bulk mail helpful. Volunteers are called
upon when needed.
Assist students and tutors on latest literacy software and other
software applications.
You or your company can donate prizes as student incentives, give
used equipment from your office(s), offer your space for tutoring
or training, or even offer free graphic design or printing services.
