LVA trains volunteers to provide free one-on-one tutoring to functionally
illiterate adults reading below the fifth-grade level.
LVA’s Basic Literacy and ESOL programs are free and confidential.
Tutoring is student-centered and based on real-life materials. For
example, if a student’s goal is to obtain their driver’s
license, studying the driving test manual becomes the text for the
weekly lessons. Students and tutors meet at times and places convenient
to both, which might be at the local library in the morning or LVA’s
computer lab anytime in the day or evening before 8pm Mondays-Wednesdays.
Students and tutors do not meet in each other’s homes.
In addition to tutoring, LVA hosts a series of small group classes
to reinforce subjects covered in the one-on-one sessions and to
provide life skills such as financial and health literacy. These
classes are specially designed for low literate adults, and are
held during the evening at LVA’s office. In 2006, LVA offered
classes in Reading Comprehension, Phonics, Computer Literacy and
Study Skills; In 2007, the first mathematics class was introduced.
In 2008, we aim to provide classes in Health and Financial Literacy.
Our Family Literacy program takes place at partnering institutions
which focus on early childhood care or education. In 2007-2008,
LVA will sponsor two family literacy programs, one at Nesbitt Elementary
School in Gwinnett County, and the other at Kensington Apartments
in DeKalb County.
Our Workplace literacy program is held at various worksites around
Metro Atlanta. Workplace Literacy is LVA’s only fee-for-service
program and takes place at the request of employers who would like
to assist their employees work more efficiently and meet their professional
goals.
