Preschool children who are not read to on a regular basis before starting
school do not develop the pre-reading skills necessary to succeed
in school. Further, children of functionally illiterate parents are
twice as likely to become functionally illiterate adults. In LVA’s
Family Literacy program, volunteers lead weekly small group sessions
to teach parents with low reading skills or limited English speaking
skills strategies that provide the next generation with the tools
and experiences necessary to begin school successfully.
Easy-to-read picture books are given to parents to share with their
children. Computer programs are available for parents and children
to use together. Many adults who would not normally join a literacy
program come to these small groups for their children’s sake,
and as a result join our Basic or ESL literacy programs to address
their own literacy needs.
