| Unique among literacy
programs in Georgia, LVA brings volunteer tutors and students together
on a one-on-one basis with instruction geared to the needs of the
individual student. Our student-centered, whole-language method
focuses on reading for meaning, comprehension, and real-life application.
Students set their own goals. The staff at LVA assists the students
with defining these goals. The goals serve as a basis for the tutoring
lessons themselves and the instructional materials used. Our basic
objective: to empower students to become functionally literate,
contributing members of our society.
LVA’s four main literacy programs are Adult
Basic Literacy, English
for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Family
Literacy and Workplace
Literacy. In addition to these core programs, LVA provides supplementary
life-skills or academic-strengthening group classes in areas such
as health literacy, financial literacy, computer training, study
skills, and more.
